IF YOU BELIEVE SIZE MATTERS: PALAU, A SMALL ISLAND IN PACIFIC IS ESTABLISHING A NON-FISHING ZONE THE SIZE OF FRANCE
In 2009, the island of Palau, located in the western Pacific Ocean just above New Guinea, established the first shark sanctuary in the world. Officials from the country say they’ve seen such success with the shark sanctuary as a buzzing tourist destination that they’ve launched plans to ban all commercial fishing in Palau’s large ocean territory by 2018.
The free fishing zone will span 630,000 square kilometres (240,000 square miles) - an area the size of France - and has been described as “unprecedented”.
The reason behind the no-fishing zone, according to the President of Palau Tommy Remengesau, was to allow the ocean to heal and replenish its populations of fish after decades of overfishing by commerical enterprises from around the world.
“Remengesau said Pacific island nations, which are also struggling to deal with climate change, were effectively “the conscience of the world" on environmental matters and had to lead by example because of their special connection with the ocean,” says Neil Sands for AFP.
“The ocean is our way of life,” Remengesau told journalists. “It sustains and nurtures us, provides us with the basics of our Pacific island cultures, our very identities.”
Remengesau added that sharks offered more value to Palau as eco-tourism assets, saying that a 2011 study conducted by the Australian Institute of Marine Science concluded that a single reef shark could raise almost US$2 million for the local economy over 10 years thanks to the tourists that visit it. Figures put the tourism industry as being almost 30 times more lucrative to Palau than the commercial tuna industry. No attacks have ever occurred as the operators are careful to make sure everyone keeps a safe distance from the sharks.
“We feel that a live shark is worth a thousand times more than a dead one," Remengesau said.

In three cases, the textbooks seem to confuse climate change and ozone depletion. One implies that it’s the loss of the ozone layer that’s leading to the planet’s warming by letting more sunlight in. Two others confuse carbon dioxide emissions with those of ozone destroying chemicals. One states that “Fossil fuel emissions have also caused a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica,” while another argues “Scientists believe the Earth is absorbing more of the sun’s harmful rays” as part of its coverage of science issues.
The problematic phrasing of the second—which suggests that scientists simply believe stuff, rather than being convinced by the evidence—makes appearances in several texts. Other passages create a false balance. One states that “Scientists disagree about what is causing climate change,” when very few of them, in fact, disagree about attributing the majority of warming to human influences.
If those are confused and misleading, at least one of the textbooks presents a bizarre opinion that we’ve never seen voiced by an actual scientist: “Some scientists say it is natural for the Earth’s temperature to be higher for a few years. They predict we’ll have some cooler years and things will even out.”"
alright i don’t normally reply to these but im feelin chatty so here goes
first of all, underarm hair helps ventilate sweat, control odor, and does a great job of keepin moisture away from the skin!! its 10x more physically comfy for me believe it or not!!
now, let’s have a short history lesson here, and keep in mind that we’re talking about westernized white women because in many places and cultures this phenomenon simply does not apply
moving onward, ladies shaving their armpits didnt really catch on until around the 1920s and this was almost entirely sparked because marketing companies wanted to double the demographic they could sell razors to. to kickstart it, they released this scandalous picture in Harper’s Bazaar in 1915:
which first planted the seed. at the time, the photo was extremely risque as it was really the first time a womans bare underarm had been shown in American media that wasnt pornographic. the word “underarm” itself was shocking! in a very deliberate move, they’d paired a revolutionary photo with a trend they wished to sell. in 1922 sears released “female” razors and it eventually trickled down to the middle class and the lower class with time, as fashion trends often do. turns out, the war against armpit hair was one of the most successful business campaigns ever!!
wanting to follow in these footsteps, they worked on leg hair. women still didnt begin shaving their legs until around 1943. even those iconic flappers who wore short hemlines still sported fuzzy legs! Daisy Fay Buchanan was probably a furry gal herself.
a part of the hesitation for a woman to shave her legs was that she would appear more promiscuous because the legs are so indicative of the vulva. alas, after WWII, Betty Grable posed for this sexy image:
and eventually the look went from celebrities to other patriotic girls and then to everyone else.
what do both have in common you ask??? they were both deliberately manufactured propaganda made by white men for the sole reason of making money by exploiting women.
im not telling you what you should or should not do with your body and all the hair that grows on it. its ok if shaving makes you feel more feminine or clean. all im saying is that it’s a good idea to analyze why youve been lead to believe a little fuzz is so “ew” to you, and really think about whether it should be. it hasn’t always been this way (in fact it only recently became so) and im here to say it doesnt have to be that way either. take this knowledge and run with it but its ultimately your choice.
as for me, no, i wouldnt say im braver or lazier than the average girl. i just reject the idea that a bullshit made up westernized whitie can make my decisions for me. and personally, i find my kitten armpits exceptionally cute.
ill leave you with this my friend: if girls weren’t meant to have body hair then why do girl’s bodies grow hair ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The man in the picture is Rachid Nekkaz, a French-Algerian businessman living in France.
He heard about the niqab ban in France. Then he announced that he will pay all fines for women who wear the niqab - not just in France but “in any country in the world that bans women from doing so”.
He opened a fund of € 1 million. Then he said, “My sister, go out free wherever you want and I will pay the fine for you”
Allahu Akbar, May Allah reward him.
Take note FEMA this is how you properly do activism to help women who cover themselves.
Just got this gem from my brother’s girlfriend
I really want a kitten so I will always have something that loves me unconditionally.
Instead of caramel apples this Halloween, melt jolly ranchers in a 250 degree oven for around 5 minutes, then pour over your apples. Add edible glitter for the sparkling space effect!
this is kind of genius
I gave in to the asks for sweaters bahah
